Across different countries, Buddhist scholars are engaged in extensive analysis of every aspect of Chan Buddhism. Moreover, they are conducting research on the historical development of Chan Buddhism in multiple regions, exploring intricate networks of transmission and interaction, and examining the processes of cross-border exchange and mutual influence with greater precision and subtlety. Consequently, there is a growing inclination to establish clear conceptual differentiations between Chinese Chan, Japanese Zen, Korean Seon, and Vietnamese Thiền, which lays the groundwork for future scholarly investigations in these interconnected realms.
The FROGBEAR (From the Ground Up: Buddhism and East Asian Religions) project, in collaboration with Yale University and the Glorisun Global Buddhist Network, organised a conference titled “How Zen Became Chan: Pre-modern and Modern Representations of a Transnational East Asian Buddhist Tradition” from July 29th to 31st, 2022. The aim of this conference was to facilitate a comprehensive examination of Chan Buddhism including its historical and practical development, as well as its global impact. By adopting a multidisciplinary approach, the conference aimed to encourage a deeper understanding of the intricate relationship between Buddhism and East Asian religions. The present collection comprises a carefully curated selection of articles derived from the conference meticulously edited by Professor Jinhua Chen from the University of British Columbia.
